The Nano and Micro Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories is a seeking highly motivated candidate for a Student Internship in the summer of 2018\. Ideal candidates should have experience programming in Matlab or an object\-oriented language such as C\# or Python\. Knowledge in other programming languages and targeted hardware programming is highly desirable\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform data acquisition using Matlab and Labview

+ Conduct finite Element Analysis with Comsol

+ Assist with RF measurements

+ Perform programming in C

+ Assist with microfluidic based testing


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited undergraduate program

+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Current enrollment in a bachelor degree program in bioengineering, biophysics, applied physics, or a related field with a background in physics and mathematical modeling

+ Successful completion of core undergraduate classes in physics and mathematics, such as calculus\-based Physics I\-III, Calculus and one semester of differential equations

+ Excellent written and spoken communication skills

+ Desire to work in a multidisciplinary environment

+ Excellent references

+ Experience with either acoustic, impedance, optical, electrical, and mechanical transduction devices

+ Programming experience in Labview, Matlab, and C

+ Knowledge of polymer chemistry and sensor surface modifications

Department Description:

The Nano and Micro Sensors Department at Sandia National Labs specializes in miniature sensors and sensor\-based system for a variety of sensing modalities including chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives \(CBRNE\)\. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV or fixed/installed formats\. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in our MESA cleanroom complex\. Our technologies are designed to be non\-invasive or minimally invasive, and easy to use in the field or at the point of care\. We have a strong multi\-disciplinary effort, an entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to partner with government, commercial/industry and university as needed to develop solutions to a variety of portable sensing problems\. We collaborate extensively with other groups at Sandia responsible for analytical and synthetic chemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, systems biology, systems engineering, bioenergy, biodefense, nanobiology and microelectronics\. Accordingly, there is an emphasis on integrating materials, coatings, nanoparticles, etc within sensor based systems\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\.
