Department Description:

The Microsystem Packaging and Polymer Processing Department \(Organization 1833\) specializes in two areas: \(1\) advanced packaging of electrical, MEMS\-based, and optical components, and \(2\) providing materials expertise, processing expertise, and prototype fabrication capabilities for a wide variety of polymer applications\.

In our microsystem packaging area, we develop prototypes and proof\-of concept devices that employ a wide variety of materials including ceramics, metals, polymers, and semiconductors\. We enable customer success across Sandia and its partnerships by providing expertise in lithography, laser processing, hybrid fabrication, microelectronic assembly/packaging, optical packaging, and in many cases the combination of these capabilities\. We also perform advanced research and development in the fundamental science and engineering areas relevant to development of packaging solutions that allow electronic, MEMS\-based, and optical components to meet demanding environmental requirements\.

In our polymer processing area, we support Sandia programs by providing materials expertise, processing expertise, and prototype fabrication capabilities for a wide variety of organic applications, including high\-performance polymers, gels, encapsulants, foams, adhesives, and composites\. We practice concurrent engineering with designers who are involved in the application of thermosetting, thermoplastic, and composite materials\. We routinely use these materials to join, package, and provide structural support to satisfy demanding electrical, mechanical, and environmental design requirements\. We support research on adhesion and on thermally and electrically conductive materials, support stress and fracture mechanics modeling efforts with experiments, perform emergency production when necessary, and work with our customers to find the right material for the application\.
