We are seeking an Intern \- Materials Science R&D Graduate Summer



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Participate with a diverse community of materials scientists on microstructural\-property characterization of additively manufactured metallic materials

+ Be exposed to activities in the Hydrogen Effects on Materials Laboratory and microscopy laboratories

+ Contribute to general laboratory tasks working with laboratory personnel

+ Perform tasks which include mechanical testing and microstructural characterization



Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirements:



Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent



Experience in a laboratory setting, including experience with mechanical testing equipment



Desired:



+ Familiarity with standard office software, and graphic presentation of data as well as have strong math skills

+ Experience with processing of additively manufactured stainless steels, mechanical testing, and microstructural characterization

+ Should be self\-motivated and able to follow direction



Department Description:



The Hydrogen and Materials Science Department provides expertise to both Sandia and the Nation on the interaction of hydrogen \(and its isotopes\) with all types of materials\. The Department performs scientific and engineering research to develop fundamental understanding on the aging of materials in gaseous environments, including hydrogen, and applies this understanding to determine its effects on the performance and reliability of materials relevant to Sandias nuclear weapons and energy missions\. Department staff conducts research and development primarily for two important customers: 1\) Gas Transfer Systems \(GTS\) for the Nation's Nuclear Weapons Enterprise; and 2\) the Fuel Cell Technologies Office \(FCTO\), part of DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy\. The Departments work covers a broad range of areas, including analyzing hydrogens long\-term impact on materials used in fuel cell and gas transfer systems, developing solar thermochemical technology for hydrogen production, assessing the suitability of materials for hydrogen storage, advising hydrogen safety codes and standards, maintaining and enhancing nationally recognized core and enabling capabilities in hydrogen science, and initiating hydrogen storage and fuel cell market transformation strategies to bring technological advancements towards broad\-based commercial availability\.

Security Clearance:



This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.



Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.



If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
