Sandia's Nuclear Monitoring and Transparency \(6831\) department conducts research, development and testing of specialized systems used for monitoring nuclear treaty relevant items and materials for a variety of U\.S\. government agencies\. The selected candidate will be involved with the mechanical design and modification of a variety of specialized test fixtures used in the testing of nuclear sensing systems\. Work will involve modification of existing mechanical SolidWorks models of these fixtures\. The work will also involve creation of new SolidWorks models for fixtures where models do not exist\. Modifications to the test fixtures will be implemented through external machine shops\. The candidate will inspect and test the modified units to verify the modifications have been performed correctly\.



The anticipated work load will be approximately 8 hours per week during the school year\. This can vary depending on candidate availability and tasking requirements\.



Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program

+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship



Desired:



+ Experience with SolidWorks CAD design and 3D modeling software

+ Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering



Department Description:



The Global Monitoring & Verification Research and Development Department \(6831\) researches, develops, evaluates and fields technologies for Sandia's Global Security and Cooperation Center for monitoring nuclear material and warheads to enable effective monitoring and verification of treaties and agreements\. We conduct technology R&D and technical collaborations in the areas of:\- warhead and materials monitoring\- treaty/agreement verification and transparencyOur diverse work includes technical development for radiation detection, sensors, tags, seals, information management and protection, and other nuclear security elements, typically with ultra\-low\-power requirements\. This organization provides the research, development, testing and evaluation for advanced technologies and modern material management systems for global applications\. The technologies and systems we develop provide technical insights to policy makers\. Our programs are collaboratively linked to other efforts in the Global Security Center 6800 and require engagement across Sandia, with other laboratories, and the international community\.

Security Clearance:



This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.



Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.



If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.
