The Geotechnology and Engineering Department has an opening for a PhD student or graduate in computer science, computer engineering, data science, or related field to develop numerical modeling, simulation, and optimization solutions for a range of applied problems related to water and energy infrastructure resilience\. The intern will assist with open source software development, novel optimization methods, case studies, data analysis and visualization, and contribute to customer and stakeholder interactions\.


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Additional Requirement:

+ Candidate must be at the status of research/thesis only


A PhD student or graduate \(research/thesis only status\) with strong data science, modeling, simulation and optimization skills\. Knowledge \(through coursework and experience\) in applications related to numerical modeling and optimization of energy and/or water infrastructure\. Strength in numerical methods, simulation, optimization, and software development\. Strong programming capabilities, proficient in Python and software version control\. Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to contribute effectively within a diverse team of scientists and engineers, self\-motivated and creative problem\-solving skills\. Experience with data analysis and visualization, working and managing large data sets, and agile software development\. Familiarity working on a linux\-based computer including knowledge of scripting languages\.

Ability/desire to work 40 hours per week\.

Department Description:

The Geotechnology and Engineering Department within the Geosciences Research and Applications Group provides innovative solutions to critical national security and defense problems through geoscience and geotechnology applications\. Department expertise includes development and application of technology necessary for energy and water resilience, recovery, and management\. We work with academic institutions to initiate the fundamental geoscience research on which solutions are built, and to train the next generation of engineers and data scientists\. We develop custom software for predictive modeling, simulation, and optimization tools for applied problems in energy, water, and national defense\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.
