We are seeking an Intern Summer \- R&D Grad



On any given day, you may be called on to:



+ Work collaboratively with R&D staff with developmental research, analysis of technology and engineering options, project design, testing, formulating conclusions, data collection, analyzing experimental data, and/or fire/heat transfer modeling

+ Assist test directors and technologists in small and large\-scale fire and heat transfer experiments



Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship

Desired:



+ Outstanding academic performance

+ Experience in numerical methods for computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer and the numerical simulation of fires, combustion, soot generation, and/or multi\-phase reacting flows

+ Programming and automation skills including LabVIEW, C\+\+, FORTRAN, Matlab, and/or python

+ Experience in computational analysis of thermal or fire environments

+ Experience in optical or laser diagnostics of thermal environments

+ Interest in applying knowledge to new technical areas and research efforts

+ Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including the development and delivery of presentations, proposals and reports



Department Description:



The Fire Science and Technology Department performs experimental and phenomenological fire research to support Sandia's national security mission\. The main focus of the department is to ensure the safety and security needs of nuclear weapons in abnormal thermal environments\. The department offers a spectrum of computational and experimental capabilities for addressing fire related challenges throughout the government, civilian, and industrial sectors\. Efforts in the computational arena include development of physics\-based subgrid models for phenomena important to fire dynamics, detection and suppression\. The department maintains and operates unique facilities for radiant heating, open and enclosed large fires\. These facilities are used in conjunction with new diagnostics and experimental capabilities developed and employed to provide data for discovery, validation, and system qualification\. The group interacts extensively with complementary technical organizations in computational sciences and thermal and fluid sciences within the Center, across the laboratory, and with academia and government\.

Security Clearance:



This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.



Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.
