The Science of Extreme Environments Research & Innovation (SEERI) Program philosophy is to foster the search for future researchers, engineers, and operators in radiation effects, pulsed power, and high energy density sciences. SEERI works to help cultivate an environment to excite and attract talented future scientists, physicists, and engineers within in these disciplines by maximizing engaging opportunities to contribute to the nation through the unique access to facilities, resources, and broad programs found only at Sandia National Laboratories. Students are offered hands on flexible, challenging, interesting, and cutting-edge research opportunities while being mentored by Sandia National Laboratories scientists and engineers. These hands-on experiences are supplemented with technical seminars and facility tours which expose students to the broad range of engineering and scientific disciplines represented at Sandia. Student Interns are provided the opportunity and encouraged to present their work and accomplishments to their peers and the Sandia scientific community every August.

The position entails working with the staff in the Electromagnetic Theory Group in support of ionizing-radiation analysis on systems or electrical components. Specifically, this includes:

+ Performing electromagnetic-plasma analysis using commercial and in-house electromagnetic software packages
+ Pre-processing activities such as preparing a discretization model for use in electromagnetic plasma simulations
+ Test or simulation data analysis, pre- or post-processing, and visualization

Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Earned bachelor's degree
+ Currently attending and enrolled full time (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Student in a physics, math, electrical or aerospace engineering curriculum with an interest in pulsed-power applications (specifically inertial confinement fusion and bremsstrahlung sources) or ionizing-radiation environments (radiation transport)
+ Interest in developing or using numerical simulations to better understand plasma phenomenon
+ Interest in data analysis, pre- or post-processing, and visualization

Desired:

+ Experience in theoretical or computational electromagnetics
+ Experience with MATLAB and PYTHON programming
+ Experience with LINUX, MPI, and threaded programming
+ Experience with commercial electromagnetic software packages
+ Experience in working in team environments including developers, analysts, and experimentalists
+ Willingness to develop expertise in different areas of plasma physics



Group 1352, Electromagnetic Theory Department, conducts analysis for weapons qualification for electromagnetic and radiation environments. The staff performs code development for simulating these complex environments, analysis using simulation software, and guidance for any supporting testing activities. The electromagnetic theory department is in close coordination and collaboration with different organizations dedicated to software development, experimental testing, and other physics disciplines within Sandia National Laboratories.

Security Clearance:


This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.
