Job Title:Intern - Computational Engineering R&D Undergrad Year Round

We are currently seeking student interns to work with our Structural Dynamics and Solid Mechanics finite element code development teams to help test and verify code, conduct research, and develop software and analysis approaches. Students will create finite element models and run our solid mechanics and structural dynamics codes on various computing platforms, visualize and post process the results, compare to closed formed solutions or previous solutions. A high degree of creativity will be needed to apply our codes in unusual applications. Students will work as team members and help each other and the staff on accomplishing these activities.

Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
+ Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
+ Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
+ U.S. citizenship

Additional Requirements:

+ Background in mechanical, civil, aerospace engineering or related engineering curriculum is required
+ Desire to work with solid mechanics and structural dynamics engineering software, learn how to work in Unix operating systems, and learn how to create finite element models and post process results
+ Ability to work in a team environment is required

Desired:

+ Exposure to finite element methods and tools, experience with the Unix operating system, and experience programming
+ Experience with C++ and Python or willingness to learn
+ This position has preference for junior or senior standing as an undergraduate and completion of strength of materials and structural dynamics courses



The Department develops advanced, massively parallel simulation codes for solid mechanics and structural dynamics. This includes the development of advanced linear and nonlinear solution algorithms, contact mechanics, finite element formulations, and research in advanced computational algorithms for continuum and noncontinuum mechanics.

Security Clearance:


This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site.
