Intern - Computational Engineering R&D Grad Year Round

We are currently seeking a year round graduate level student intern to work with our Structural Dynamics and Solid Mechanics finite element code development teams\. The student intern will work with our staff to explore some novel ideas and projects\. Actual assignments would depend on the qualifications and interest of the individual candidate, but would likely involve:



+ Finite element implementations on next\-generation computers \(e\.g\. GPUs\)

+ Massively parallel solvers

+ Multi\-scale material modeling

+ Inverse methods \(e\.g\. unknown parameters, topology optimization\)

+ Reduced order modeling

+ Failure modeling \(e\.g\. XFEM, phase field, gradient plasticity\)

+ Contact algorithms

+ Infinite elements, perfectly matched layers

+ Acoustics

+ Fluid\-structure interaction and multi\-physics

+ Isogeometric, meshless, particle, or polyhedral elements

+ Higher order elements

+ Uncertainty quantification

+ Algorithms for handling big data in large finite element simulations



Required:



You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:



+ Earned bachelor's degree

+ Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0

+ Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

+ U\.S\. citizenship



Additional Requirements:



+ Graduate status \(MS\) or higher in a mechanical, civil, aerospace engineering or related engineering curriculum

+ Experience with finite element methods, solid mechanics and structural dynamics engineering software, and Unix operating systems

+ Extensive experience and knowledge should exist in at least one of the topic areas described above

+ Ability to work in a team environment is required



Desired:



+ Knowledge of C\+\+, Python, mesh generation tools \(e\.g\., Patran or Cubit\), post processing tools \(e\.g\., Patran and Ensight\)



Department Description:



The Department develops advanced, massively parallel simulation codes for solid mechanics and structural dynamics\. This includes the development of advanced linear and nonlinear solution algorithms, contact mechanics, finite element formulations, and research in advanced computational algorithms for continuum and noncontinuum mechanics\.

Security Clearance:



This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.



Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\.
