Inspection Engineer (R&D Engineer 2)

Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science

and engineering on behalf of national security. This position supports R&D engineering activities as it relates to production agency inspection engineering with specific responsibilities in the areas of inspection and acceptance testing. Your role involves support of detonator and/or plutonium inspection processes for the Quality Engineering and Inspection Group, which is responsible for the quality and inspection of War Reserve components. We will rely on your expertise to develop solutions to complex issues, improve inspection cycle times and deploy inspection processes capable of meeting accuracy requirements.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited college or university with 2-4 years of related experience; advanced degree considered in lieu of work experience

  • Experience developing inspection processes, including specifying equipment, characterizing process uncertainties, training users, publishing user instructions and maintaining process performance

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and ability to provide leadership on measurement and testing systems (e.g. coordinate measuring machines, laser interferometers, optical measurement techniques and open setup techniques)

  • Working knowledge of quality assurance standards such as NAP-24, NQA-1 and DOE Order 414.D

  • Ability to obtain DOE Q clearance (U.S. citizenship required)

  • Desired skills: experience designing, planning and executing projects associated with manufacturing; proficiency in Zeiss Calypso Measurement software; industrial manufacturing experience with high-volume product output; and knowledge of the Defense Program Business Process Systems (DPBPS) requirement for weapons design and manufacturing
