Job Details

Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KAIST. The Department Head has responsibility for administration of the academic programs and the effectiveness of the teaching, research and service efforts of the department, as well as for expanding the funded research, grant and scholarship initiatives. Fluency in Korean language is expected to ensure smooth and effective communication with faculty members and administrative staffs.

KAIST was established by the government in 1971 as the nation’s first graduate school specializing in science and engineering education and research. The school’s founding has been a catalyst for Korea’s rapid rise from a producer of light industry goods to a world leader in advanced technologies. 2016 QS World University Rankings ranked KAIST as the 46rd overall, and the 21th in mechanical engineering. KAIST is also recognized as the 6th in the world’s most innovative universities by REUTERS. KAIST is located in the Daedeok Research Complex in the city of Daejeon, 150 kilometers south of the capital city, Seoul. Daedeok complex is the nation’s R&D capital and home of over 50 public and private research institutes, universities, and high-tech and venture capital companies. KAIST presents more than 11,000 students, including 500 international students, and 1,000 faculties and staffs. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been playing a pivotal role in high-level education and research in Korea. The graduates, now numbering more than 6200, have become the leaders in industries, research institutions, universities and government organizations. We shall continue to make strenuous efforts to pursue excellence and distinction in producing world class mechanical engineers. The department has 55 faculty members including 19 emeritus professors, 420 undergraduate students, and 570 graduate students. Through our undergraduate program, B.S. degrees are offered in mechanical engineering. Graduate programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in mechanical engineering with specialization in design manufacturing for reliability, multi transcending scale engineering, energy generation & efficiency sustainability, biomedical engineering, and intelligent mechatronics robotics.
