The Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) invites qualified individuals to for the position of Group Leader, Additive Manufacturing Core Technology.

UTC is a $60 billion company that supplies products and services to the aerospace and building services industries. The newly-formed UTC Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (CoE), centrally hosted at UTC’s Research Center, will encompass a critical mass of Additive Manufacturing process and industrialization experts, the necessary equipment, and develop the strategic collaborations needed to rapidly mature the technology and manufacturing readiness of the critical technologies that are required to accelerate the development, transition, and deployment of additive manufactured products and systems for UTC’s business units (UTC Aerospace Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Otis Elevator, UTC Climate, Controls, & Security).

The Group Leader position includes a broad range of leadership activities important to the effective and efficient operation of the AM CoE. Primary responsibilities include:
  • Technical Leadership: provide technical leadership in the core technology areas of additive manufacturing, including modeling, simulation and design specific to AM; process sensing and control; additive manufacturing processes; materials informatics and analytics; and material characterization.
  • Capability Development: develop and implement a strategic vision for the capabilities under his/her responsibility including staff, facilities, and external partnerships. Engage effectively with the UTC Business Units and UTRC Program Offices to develop an understanding of current directions and to participate in the formulation of future activities.
  • Allocating Capability: engage with CoE, UTRC, and UTC leadership to enable effective allocation of staff to critical projects. Ensure quality of technical execution.
  • Staff Development: hire and motivate world class technical talent; central role in performance reviews, individual development/career planning, mentoring
  • Operations: responsible for environmental health and safety in offices, planning and executing indirect budgets, meeting financial targets.
  • External Resource Development: Team with the UTRC Program Offices, UTC business units, and external institutions to create funding opportunities aligned with the CoE strategic vision and roadmap. Lead or key contributor to proposals, motivate/develop customer-savvy technical leaders, align resources and incentives, assist in the acquisition of contract awards.

Qualification: The successful candidate should be a well-recognized technical expert in the multidisciplinary field of manufacturing, preferably additive manufacturing. In addition, the candidate should be able to demonstrate experience in building capability through hiring and development of staff, externalization, and infrastructure improvements. She/he must be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment focused on innovation and be able to partner with leading worldwide institutions to fulfill organizational objectives. The candidate must demonstrate superior communication skills and be able to provide timely, accurate, and detailed reports and presentations.

US Citizenship or US Permanent Resident status required.

Education: Candidates for this position require a Ph.D. Degree in Materials or Manufacturing Engineering (or a related field) with at least 7 years’ experience in an applied research environment or a Master’s Degree in Materials or Manufacturing Engineering (or a related field) with at least 13 years’ experience in an applied research environment. Experience with certification of aerospace parts is preferred.
