Description: Description About the Graduate Development Program National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is the company’s flagship pipeline program, targeting recent college graduates joining the company in entry-level full time positions. The GDP is designed to prepare early career professionals for future leadership roles within the organization, aims to support Graduates in developing as leaders, guide their career, and increase their business talents and skills. It provides opportunities for Graduates to explore a broad range of disciplines across our functions and locations, work on a variety of projects, and expand their network. Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an 8-week Orientation. Graduates will spend time learning the core functions of the business, networking with our Executive team, and traveling to our different jurisdictional areas. By the end of Orientation, Graduates have an in depth understanding of who National Grid is as a company and how we do business. They have also formed a network with their fellow Graduates as well as senior business leaders, key GDP stakeholders and GDP Alumni. Graduates also take part in quarterly development sessions with their cohort as well as complete a Capstone Project at the end of their first year with the company. About the Position: National Grid is seeking a Structural Engineer for a position within the Substation Engineering Department at our Waltham, MA location. Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Plan and Design new stations, station additions, and modifications using station procedures, standards, sound engineering practices, and sound safety practices. Participate in the development of physical layout, scope, and cost estimates for projects. Develop and verify project structural designs for adequacy, and adherence to appropriate standards & codes. These practices include, but are not limited to environmental and safety requirements. Design physical layout, site design, access roads, site preparation, drainage, foundations and superstructures for substations. Select material and equipment for design consistency and efficient installation. Provide technical support to internal customers and other internal departments. Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations. Prepare project specifications, and develop procedures and technical documents. Develop cost effective and safe solutions to design requirements. Participate in project estimating and economic analysis. Coordinate with design consultants, and interface with in-house design staff. Actively participate on multiple project teams. Support Environmental and other permitting efforts. Development of Standards. Engineering Graduate Rotations: Our engineers are shaping the future of the energy industry. This position will take part in our Engineering Graduate Development Rotational Program, an 18-month experience to help you develop technical and leadership skills. You will complete three 6-month rotations in varying engineering departments. Your first rotation will be in the role outlined above and you will return to this role following two other 6-month rotations where your knowledge of engineering and project management at National Grid will be expanded.
Qualifications Bachelor or Master’s degree from an accredited institution Concentration in academic studies relevant to one of the career paths Graduated between May 2017 and May 2018 Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; official college transcript required for confirmation Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills Preference given to candidates with relevant internship experiences Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program June 4, 2018 Valid driver’s license with safe driving history Proven leadership experience in at least one of the following: College leadership position (e.g., student government, clubs, athletics). Leadership and/or volunteer experience, in and/or out of the college environment Experienced a full or part-time job while at college and acquired relevant work experience Knowledge of the following is required:Soil Mechanics, Foundation design, Reinforced concrete design, Structural analysis,Structural steel design, the fundamentals of surveying Knowledge of the following would be beneficial: Substation construction and maintenance technique, correct applications of heavy equipment, electric utility operation practices, Station materials, Detailing structural components, ANSI, ASTM, EPA, OHSA, ASCE, AISC, ACI, IBC, and the NYS Building Code, Storm water / Drainage analysis and design This position is one of National Grid's career path roles (Associate, Senior, Lead) which provide for promotional opportunities within and across salary bands as you develop and evolve in the position by gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
