Description: Description About the Graduate Development Program: National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is the company’s flagship pipeline program, targeting recent college graduates joining the company in entry-level full time positions. The GDP is designed to prepare early career professionals for future leadership roles within the organization, aims to support Graduates in developing as leaders, guide their career, and increase their business talents and skills. It provides opportunities for Graduates to explore a broad range of disciplines across our functions and locations, work on a variety of projects, and expand their network. Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an 8-week Orientation. Graduates will spend time learning the core functions of the business, networking with our Executive team, and traveling to our different jurisdictional areas. By the end of Orientation, Graduates have an in depth understanding of who National Grid is as a company and how we do business. They have also formed a network with their fellow Graduates as well as senior business leaders, key GDP stakeholders and GDP Alumni. Graduates also take part in quarterly development sessions with their cohort as well as complete a Capstone Project at the end of their first year with the company. About the Position: Project Engineering & Design is responsible for the design of large-scale projects allowing for the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to customers. Such projects include: transmission/distribution pipelines; regulator/take stations; bridge/railroad/water crossings; LNG/CNG; and other special capital projects. Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Provide gas engineering and design for distribution/transmission pipelines, bridge/highway/waterway crossings, regulating facilities, large metering, gate station and LNG/CNG projects, Complex City/State construction. Based on scopes aligned with system and customer requirements. Incorporate applicable Standards, Procedures, and State/Federal statutory requirements into Gas systems designs. Incorporate corporate process safety procedures into the project work flow as required. Develop project estimates, within accuracy requirements. Identify/specify special order (non-stock) required materials. Develop and gain approval of project scope, cost estimate and schedule. Prepare project documentation, including corporate sanctioning paper where required. Enter project information into the project work management and financial systems. Identify and acquire the necessary permits, licenses, and land rights associated with the project. Working with others in Gas Operations and Gas Engineering, develop engineering and operations procedures to support the engineering and design of gas facilities in accordance with company and regulatory requirements including all safety, health and environmental standards and procedures. Working with the Maps and Records department to ensure that system maps and records are available, and of sufficient accuracy, to support Gas systems designs. Identify where mapping differs from as-built conditions and provide input to rectify variances. Assist Codes and Standards Engineers with the evaluation of company engineering design standards, to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements. As may be required, participate or lead inter-regional projects activities. This may require travel to our upstate and / or downstate New York service territories. Participate in Storm restoration activities or other system emergencies (gas and electric) as called upon. Qualifications Bachelor or Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an Engineering discipline Concentration in academic studies relevant to one of the career paths Graduated between May 2017 and May 2018 Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; official college transcript required for confirmation Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills Preference given to candidates with relevant internship experiences Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program June 4, 2018 Valid driver’s license with safe driving history Proven leadership experience in at least one of the following: College leadership position (e.g., student government, clubs, athletics). Leadership and/or volunteer experience, in and/or out of the college environment Experienced a full or part-time job while at college and acquired relevant work experience PE/EIT registration is desired, but not required. Understanding of design and construction standards, engineering drawings, and underground construction methods and procedures. Technical knowledge of natural gas system design and operations including natural gas industry codes and regulations, engineering and environmental codes and standards. Strong knowledge of OSHA, PHMSA, and MA and RI regulations. Project management experience on medium to large scale capital construction projects is a plus. Commitment to Safety as a core value. Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects within budget and time constraints. Ability to assess project scopes and identify required variances prior to design to ensure a complete, high quality and safe project outcome. Demonstration of a high level of personal initiative and ability to interact with a diverse group of company personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials in a positive collaborative manner. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively both internally and externally to the organization. Ability to utilize project estimating tools and undertake analysis using such tools to provide written reports identifying causes for variation and possible corrective measures. Familiarity with work management applications such as SAP, Maximo and Power Plant is a plus. Capability Requirements: Develop project bid specifications and assist in the procurement as necessary of either or both engineering design work to be performed by external design firms, and construction services. Manage external engineering design firms to ensure all work is performed in accordance with company standards, within budget and on schedule. Perform design quality peer reviews of other engineer’s work. Establish and lead, as necessary, an engineering design project team to develop and manage all engineering aspects of a project, up to and including project closeout and compilation of as-built documentation. Participate and where called upon lead project team members towards the common goal of delivering a high quality and safe result, while promoting a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and efficient resource utilization. Effectively communicate project parameters with involved internal and external stake holders. Maintain an appropriate record of conferences, meetings, discussions, and verbal directions among the Company, City/State agencies, and other utilities and impacted parties. Implement change control procedures as necessary to track design changes instituted by engineering or field operations and identify any associated risks that may result. Document any requests to deviate from approved/agreed to parameters and seek authorization where required.
