Description: Description About the Graduate Development Program: National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is the company’s flagship pipeline program, targeting recent college graduates joining the company in entry-level full time positions. The GDP is designed to prepare early career professionals for future leadership roles within the organization, aims to support Graduates in developing as leaders, guide their career, and increase their business talents and skills. It provides opportunities for Graduates to explore a broad range of disciplines across our functions and locations, work on a variety of projects, and expand their network. Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an 8-week Orientation. Graduates will spend time learning the core functions of the business, networking with our Executive team, and traveling to our different jurisdictional areas. By the end of Orientation, Graduates have an in depth understanding of who National Grid is as a company and how we do business. They have also formed a network with their fellow Graduates as well as senior business leaders, key GDP stakeholders and GDP Alumni. Graduates also take part in quarterly development sessions with their cohort as well as complete a Capstone Project at the end of their first year with the company.
About the Position: The Associate Engineer p rovides engineering support and guidance for various fleet related processes including assisting with the V ehicle & Equipment Replacement Program, providing specifications for Electric & Gas utility vehicle and equipment, and acting as a liaison between field operations and vehicle & equipment manufacturers Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Assists with annual vehicle and equipment acquisition process. Specify and obtain vehicles and automotive and utility work equipment for the Company. Interpret and evaluate vendor bids, monitor equipment construction phases and develop vehicle delivery schedules. Monitor manufacturer vendor performance, ensure company expectations and order details are being met, correct deficiencies as required. Support field analysis of equipment defect & accident investigations. Assists with safety related recalls & service bulletins within multiple fleet repair facilities. Assists with truck committees to identify issues and opportunities to improve vehicle specifications. Develop purchase and acceptance test specifications in compliance with current D.O.T., O.S.H.A., ANSI, SAE and other Federal and State Safety and/or engineering guidelines. Perform compliance review and acceptance testing at vendor facilities & in the field. Keep abreast of all environmental compliance regulations pertaining to the fleet maintenance industry to monitor compliance. Work with Lead / Principal Engineers to develop and update Maintenance Service Schedules and inspection procedure for equipment. Investigate accidents and equipment failures. Develop contacts with key personnel and officials of other organizations such as vehicle and equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Support in-house warranty agreements and initiatives. Research new vehicle technology; hybrids, hydrogen, fuel cell, etc to meet all emission requirements Assists Lead / Principal Engineers in creating and maintaining standardized vehicle and equipment specifications
Qualifications Bachelor or Master’s degree in Engineering from an accredited institution. Preference will be given to fleet related automotive engineering. Concentration in academic studies relevant to one of the career paths Graduated between May 2017 and May 2018 Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; official college transcript required for confirmation Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills Preference given to candidates with relevant internship experiences Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program June 4, 2018 Valid driver’s license with safe driving history Proven leadership experience in at least one of the following: College leadership position (e.g., student government, clubs, athletics). Leadership and/or volunteer experience, in and/or out of the college environment Experienced a full or part-time job while at college and acquired relevant work experience Knowledge of Transportation State and Federal Regulations and O.S.H.A. codes is helpful, as well as knowledge of SAP. The ability to work effectively with diverse people and personalities is essential. Awareness of utility equipment safety standards, laws and regulations, DOT, ANSI, SAE, and FMVSS is helpful. Ability to demonstrate creativity, foresight and engineering judgment in solving fleet engineering problems. Ability to translate technical expertise into layman terms interacting with internal and external clients. Provide project management support as needed to the team. This role requires travel within the National Grid service territory and to conferences, training and supplier factory locations within the US.
