The Electromagnetic (EM) Systems Engineering and Qualification Department (1354) provides analysis, experiments and design guidance to support the development of EM- shielded/protected electronics systems to the effects of non-ionizing EM radiation in conjunction with a variety of electrical test laboratories for weapon systems and components. This includes direct injection of electrical insults into test assets, and use of large volume test facilities that simulate non-ionizing EM field transient-pulsed (EMP) environments including microwave-band pulses, nearby and direct-strike lightning, electrostatic generation and discharge, and broadband continuous-wave (cw) environments. We support the qualification of nuclear weapons in normal, abnormal and elements of hostile and future-threat EM environments (EME). Laboratory facilities include testing within radio frequency (RF) enclosed shield rooms that are humidity and temperature controlled. Full system qualification testing includes use of Sandia's reverberation, anechoic and polarization controlled large test chambers, the Sandia Lightning Simulator, and a threat-level high-altitude EMP simulator configurable to a pulsed or cw environment. Department 1354, works closely with 1352 (EM Theory), 1353 (Electrical Sciences and Experiments), and 1340 (ionizing radiation Effects Sciences & Applications). Our customer based is across the Lab and supports DOD and other government agencies Strategic Partnership Programs (SPP) and Cooperative R&D Agreements (CRADAs). Current programs include the Mk21fuze, W80-4 cruise missile, various delivery system-weapon pairs EME effects, source region EMP simulations for W87 and W78 systems, and weapon systems component/subsystem projects.
