Located in the heart of Happy Valley, State College, PA, The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State is an integral part of one of the leading research universities in the nation and serves as a University Center of Excellence in Defense science, systems, and technologies with a focus in naval missions and related areas. As a DoD-designated, U.S. Navy UARC (University Affiliated Research Center), ARL maintains a long-term strategic relationship with the U.S. Navy and provides support for other services. Our Fluids Research Department, part of the Fluid Dynamics Division in the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office (FDAO) is seeking a mid-level Hydrodynamic Engineer to conduct basic and applied research in fluid mechanics, utilizing advanced instrumentation to investigate a wide range of areas of hydrodynamics interest, including complex single and multi-phase flows, cavitating flows, marine vehicles, turbomachinery, and renewable energy production

    What YOU Will Do
    You will: Prepare and execute hydrodynamic testing at ARL and other government testing facilities; design test articles; write, develop, and submit proposals for funded research; cultivate positive relationships with existing and potential government and industry sponsors; collaborate with other research and academic faculty; and document research activities in technical reports

    What YOU Need to be Successful
    This position can be filled as either a non-tenure track Research Faculty position or R&D Engineer and typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree or PhD preferred) in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a discipline with fluid dynamics emphasis (Physics, Engineering Science, etc.) plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a mid-level position. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for a higher level position

    Preferred experience:
  • Knowledge of unsteady fluid dynamics
  • Experience with testing in hydrodynamics facilities
  • Knowledge of cavitation and multi-phase flows
  • Experience with advanced flow diagnostics techniques (high speed imaging, volumetric particle image velocimetry, laser Doppler velocimetry)
  • Familiarity with solid modeling/CAD systems, MATLAB, or Simulink

    Required experience/skills:
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good presentation skills
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a project team
  • The ability to travel off-site and perform extended off-site work

    You will be subject to a government security investigation and you must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. This is a one-year, fixed-term renewable appointment
