Engineer Scientist II – Information, Communications, and Cyber Security

Knoxville, TN 

The Position:
Supports research efforts in cyber security for the electric sector.  Performs advanced engineering/scientific analysis demonstrating creativity and ingenuity in providing technical solutions and meeting project goals. Works independently and under minimum supervision to resolve technical and logistical issues associated with the development of cyber security technology. Collaborates with EPRI staff, utility members, and equipment manufacturers to execute project plans and develop project deliverables. Performs complex engineering/ scientific analysis with moderate direction and supervision. Works directly with EPRI staff and moderate interaction with members and industry.

Job Functions:
• Conducts technical searches, research, and analyzes information in support of the cyber security project team.
• May conduct independent field research at the direction of the project manager
• Assists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations
• Reviews progress and evaluates results. Makes changes in methods, design or equipment where necessary.
• Exercises latitude in determining technical assignment objectives.
• Provides technical advice and counsel to other professionals within EPRI.
• Supports research and development activities in EPRI’s cyber security laboratory.


Education Level and Years of Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required
• Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and have 2-3 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.
• BS degree in EE, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Telecommunications, or similar discipline preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and have 2-3 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.
• Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
• Present research externally
• Understand how work fits across technical area
• Requires supervision and guidance to conduct specific research tasks and complete projects
• Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research
• May participate in multiple projects
• Individual contributor

The Ideal Candidate:
• Background in technologies, strategies and implementations for electric sector equipment.
• One to three years’ experience deploying electric sector technologies such as SCADA, Wide-Area Monitoring Systems, etc.
• Experience working with hardware and software for embedded and networked systems. 
• Experience working in both Windows and Linux environments. 
• Experience in laboratory environments.
• Knowledge of standard networking and internet applications. 
• Knowledge of DNP, Modbus, IEC 61850, C37.118, or C12.22 preferred.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Outstanding problem solving and analytical skills are required.
• Ability to convey technical results effectively to other staff and to clients/members.
• Ability to acquire and develop cyber security expertise for electric sector technologies.

EPRI is undertaking a substantial research and demonstration effort to address the research challenges associated with Information and Communication Technology for the Electric Grid.  The successful candidate will have an opportunity to make a notable and lasting contribution to this important aspect of electric utility operations.
