Description: Description National Grid’s Connect 21 strategy is to design, build, and operate efficient energy systems for the 21st century digital economy. Recognizing that renewable energy plays an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, National Grid Power Plant Operations (PPO) is implementing new technologies that will allow us to meet the future energy needs of customers while supporting environmental compliance. National Grid PPO owns and operates 3,860 megawatts (MW) of steam and gas turbine units on Long Island. PPO is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of these units. The Power Engineering Department (PED) within PPO develops engineered solutions for the steam and gas turbine units, and works closely with plant personnel during the engineering and construction phases of specific projects. In addition, PED is actively involved with new project development including, but not limited to, utility scale battery storage, solar and simple cycle combustion turbine generators. The Power Engineering Dept. (PED) is a multi-disciplined team of engineers who are self-directed and empowered to develop and implement solutions on a wide range of PPO and Corporate initiatives. Engineers have project ownership from inception through operation. PED engineers are proud of how they develop solutions, embrace new technologies and collaborate with others to provide successful solutions. About the Position: This Asset and Performance Engineer reports to the PED Investment and Asset Manager and will support internal and external team members through collaboration on new project development opportunities and improvements to our existing fleet of steam and gas turbine units on Long Island. This position is responsible to research, develop and implement power supply and storage technologies that capitalize on the evolving energy market in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The person in this role is also responsible to assess and implement new technologies on our existing steam and combustion turbine units as part of the capital improvement process. This position is responsible to perform technical, financial, operational and evaluations of new and existing assets. Project assessments shall include, but are not limited to, different design options, business alternatives, cost/benefit analysis, risk analysis and project performance evaluations. This position will include project engineer and project manager responsibilities. The engineer will evaluate all aspects of design, licensing, procurement, construction, commissioning and operations on all projects. This role is responsible to develop specification, standards and procedures on projects. The person in this role will participate in industry groups and forums to support objectives. This position is an essential contributor to our goal of asset management and technology modernization.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Serve as the project engineer and/or project manager during the design, construction and operation of projects on existing generating assets and new energy development opportunities. Provide technical evaluations of new energy development projects and alternatives in areas like energy storage, solar and combustion turbines. Evaluate new and emerging technologies for application in new projects and existing assets. Establish relationships with National Grid and business partners to effectively collaborate on new energy business opportunities like energy storage, solar collectors and combustion turbines. Research and evaluate new products, technologies and systems that offer value to the customer and load serving entity. Provide guidance to PPO personnel, vendors, internal and external partners on current and future project requirements. Provide effective communication with PPO personnel, partners, vendors, load serving entities, internal and external stakeholders on all projects to promote the effective implementation of projects. Serve as the technical consultant throughout project development, construction, commissioning and operation on existing generating assets. Perform safety, environmental and financial risk analysis. Perform engineering calculations and studies to support project scope. Develop specifications, standards and procedures for projects. Develop cost estimates, benefit analysis and risk assessment on projects. Conduct performance assessments on existing assets and proposed projects to establish design objectives and validate the achievement of objectives after commissioning.
Qualifications Knowledge & Experience Required: Experience in managing internal and external project teams. Experience with power generating equipment and support systems. Experience with energy storage equipment, solar and electric generating systems. Experience in all phases of project management including product development, construction, commissioning and operation. Experience in communicating technological ideas, technical designs and engineering concepts to internal and external stakeholders. Experience in project cost/benefit and risk analysis. Experience in equipment and system performance analysis. Experience in processes to acquiring, compiling and evaluate data. Experience developing programs and reports to present the results of data analysis. Knowledge of industry trends and innovation in battery storage, solar, steam turbine and combustion turbine technology. Knowledge of project licensing and permitting processes. Other Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline is required. Advanced degree preferred. NYS Intern Engineer Certification or Professional Engineering License preferred. Minimum of 4 years of related work experience. Energetic, creative, capable and committed to promoting innovative ideas and achieving or exceeding objectives. Self-starter who is comfortable leading and managing project teams. Able to engage and lead others to successful results on projects. Analytical and solution based thinking necessary. Work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects, including high visibility initiatives. Comfortable with ambiguity and change. Capable of working in a matrix organization and achieve results. Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Power Point applications. Familiar with financial modeling of projects.
