Job Purpose:

Develop policies, strategies and programs to support Company objectives in an economic manner that optimizes the use of existing systems and minimizes environmental concerns.

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be related to asset management of substation assets from 4kV to 115kV.

Key Accountabilities:

· Act as the Step 0 project team lead for distribution substation projects including development of the scope, design criteria, construction review, data integration of deliverables.
· Perform cost and risk studies to optimize strategic asset replacement
· Develop prioritization list of asset replacement candidates based on condition and performance in conjunction with subject matter experts
· Develop technical options for managing equipment to its economic end of life
· Undertake asset health reviews, analysis of asset lifecycle costs, capital and maintenance work prioritization, and benchmarking activities.

· Conduct site inspections, as necessary, to evaluate asset strategies.

· Ensure asset data is captured correctly in the appropriate asset registers.

· Participate in project design reviews.

· Design, develop implementation plans, modify, and evaluate policies, strategies and programs of assets and asset systems to support Company objectives.

· Develop complex engineering studies, plans, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments to develop integrated system plans and ensure the adequate performance of the electric transmission and distribution system.

· Analyze policies, strategies and programs that are in progress or completed to determine their effectiveness versus stated goals.

· Determine methods and techniques for obtaining results.

· Recommend alternative engineering solutions to management to meet business needs

· Deliver on commitments and manage outside engineering services to accomplish the assigned work

· Monitor project timeliness and budgets.

· Analyze and design engineering methods.

· Design, develop, modify, and evaluate systems, processes, or facilities to support company objectives.

· Provide technical support to internal and external departments for the application, operation, and maintenance of the electric transmission and distribution system.

· Evaluate and recommend new equipment and technologies for the electric transmission and distribution system.

· Resolve technical issues.

· Develop long-range maintenance and asset replacement policies, strategies and programs.

· Develop Investment Grade estimates and lead the Conceptual Estimate through the Step 0 of project management process.

· Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simulataneously.

· Work in a Project Management team environment.

· Travel will be required

· Conduct specific projects within area of capability and perform engineering studies, analysis and investigations, under supervision, in order to recommend corrective action in problem areas, or to prevent problems.

· Independently collate and analyze data within one area using pre-determined tools, methods and formats in order to support the department’s decision making process. (DA1)

· Execute instructions and requests, plan and organize resources and make appropriate arrangements to ensure that work is carried out efficiently and in line with relevant policies and processes. (PI1)

· Test and challenge existing procedures and highlight areas for improvement in order to ensure they are robust. (CI1)

· Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to obtain and share information that will benefit National Grid. (BP1)

· Undertake specific tasks of varying complexity in order to support colleagues in the design of technical solutions. (TR1)

· Build upon technical/professional skills within own area of specialism or of other processes in order to continually grow your personal contribution to the business. (PS1)

Additional Accountabilities for Band E: (The work assigned is generally the same across bands, however the position has a career path which provides for promotional opportunities within and across bands as an employee evolves in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills. )

Band E employees are expected to deliver on the key accountabilities list above as well as those listed below.

· Evaluate engineering processes and systems with consideration to operation, safety and maintenance requirements in order to make recommendations and subsequently develop plans for improvements, where appropriate.

· Develop and maintain systems, designs, specifications, standards, models and procedures in order to support design solutions and enhance safety, efficiency and operability and support local decision making. (TR2)

· Develop high level plans for own area and champion innovation through the use of pilots, in conjunction with business partners and service providers in order to test their validity across the business and ensure value-add of initiatives. (PD3)

· Provide technical guidance, support and coaching to others in order to share knowledge and develop technical understanding within discipline. (TL2)

· Develop and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders in order to share best practice, provide technical advice and build bases of influence. (BP2)

· Keep up to date with market/regulatory developments within own profession/discipline in order to ensure the optimization of best practice for National Grid. (PS2)

· Challenge existing ways of working and continuously seek ways to do things better in order to drive greater efficiencies within assigned area. (CI2)

· Promote and implement procedural best practice in order to ensure all working practice (and where relevant, health and safety standards) are compliant with National Grid policies and regulatory requirements. (PI2)

Additional Accountabilities for Band D:

Band D employees are expected to deliver on the key accountabilities list above as well as those listed below.

· Lead the implementation of engineering design for a specific area through the management of an engineering team and in consultation with other groups within the area in order to ensure design is fit for purpose and benefits National Grid operations.

· Make authoritative technical recommendations in order to provide design solutions which have a significant impact on business performance in the short and longer term. (TR4)

· Lead, motivate and develop a professional team of engineering staff, prioritize work and allocate resources in order to ensure results are delivered in line with expectations and customer needs. (TL3)

· Develop processes and review policies relating engineering systems/processes in order to ensure they are in line with strategic business objectives and meet the needs of customers and regulators. (PD4)

· Proactively build and maintain internal and external networks in order to penetrate, absorb and apply technical best practice to the engineering discipline. (PS4)

· Develop process and policy specifications and criteria and options and evaluate those options to support senior management decision-making in the relevant field. (TR3)

· Work with business units to translate objectives into well defined requirements with clearly defined business cases in order to support change and innovation within National Grid. (BP3)
Qualifications

Knowledge & Experience Requirements:

· A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology from an ABET accredited engineering school with up to 2 years of related experience in an entry-level position, or equivalent work experience.

· Knowledge of National Grid's business operations, company policies and practices.

· Knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation.


  • Understanding of Company's business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices.


  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations and the National Electric Safety Code.


  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.


  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work in a collaborative environment to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.


  • Proficient with the use of personal computers including automated tools.


  • Understanding of project management techniques and methods.


  • Valid driver's license.

    Knowledge & Experience Requirements for Band D:


    Band D employees are expected to have the knowledge & experience listed below.

    · A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology. Completion of a Master’s Degree in an approved engineering discipline from an ABET accredited engineering school is preferred.

    · Registered Professional Engineering License preferred with up to 12 years professional development in an engineering field.

    · Expert within their field. Extensive and significant knowledge of one field of work or broad technical depth in multiple, related fields.

    · Knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards and legislation. Knowledge of current trends within the industry and developments in legislation or regulation.

    · Knowledge of National Grid's business operations, company policies and practices. Knowledge of division policies, processes and fields of work.
