The Materials Chemistry Department is seeking a staff member to operate and maintain our electroplating and surface finishing laboratory in support of national security programs\. The successful candidate will serve as the primary contact for technical expertise input into design modification and optimization, material selection, planning, and monitoring of electroplating and surface finishing processes\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with other engineers and scientists to ensure the product and system requirements are taken into account from product conception to final results;

+ Provide technical support to production, purchasing of material and chemicals, and analytical operations;

+ Maintain safe and effective daily operations, manage tactical day\-to\-day technical issues and resolve problems expeditiously;

+ Liaison with research and development organizations to ensure the success of Sandia programs\.


+ Bachelors in relevant STEM discipline plus five or more years of relevant experience, or a Masters plus two or more years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience;

+ Experience in surface finishes and electrochemistry;

+ Knowledgeable about process controls and characterization;

+ Ability to scale up processes;

+ Demonstrated knowledge about cleaning, anodization, electroless and electrolytic processes;

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance\.


+ Demonstrated ability to work with customers;

+ Demonstrated ability to work in a safety environment;

+ Ability to design fixturing;

+ Demonstrated writing skills;

+ Demonstrated ability to work in dynamic team environment;

+ Active DOE Q level security clearance\.

Department Description:

The Materials Chemistry Department is a group of Chemists, Material Scientists, and Chemical Engineers that actively supports the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile by providing materials expertise to SNL's non\-nuclear components\. We use our understanding of chemical properties to design, evaluate and exploit monomers, polymers and functional materials\. Our core competencies span foams, composites, adhesives, plastics, surface finishing and electrochemical deposition\. We have the facilities for materials characterization, design prototyping and WR processing\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\.
