We are seeking a R&D Electromechanical Technologist who will be an integral member of the Engineering Services Team at Sandia National California Calibration Standards Lab \(CSL\) and the associated Electronics Laboratory\. This individual will be responsible for overseeing the contracted calibration and certification of standards and measurement and test equipment for Sandia line organizations\. Additionally, the technologist is expected to review, develop and document new Measurement Assurance Plans \(MAPS\), measurement techniques and procedures, provide training and assistance to our customers, participate in audits of the CSL and our commercial calibration laboratory contractors\. This position requires problem solving skills and technical aptitude related to metrology and calibration spanning a broad range of measurement areas, systems and equipment, methods, and procedures\. The selected individual will be expected to develop and provide recommendations to resolve calibration issues and improve calibration quality and efficiency\. This position also involves generating certificates and reports, maintaining written procedures, and working with the engineering staff to make laboratory and procedural improvements\. The work requires the use of a calibration database\.



In addition, this person will oversee operations, equipment, facility interface and customer collaboration in the Electronics Lab at the California Site\. This lab has a wide range of shared department provided general lab equipment as well as customer supplied equipment\. Maintaining the equipment and ensuring that equipment is properly calibrated in a timely manner are among the duties of the position\.



Supports science and engineering research, development, and engineering \(RD&E\) activities which are characterized primarily by their non\-routine, prototypical nature\. Helps RD&E technical staff realize their ideas and designs and accomplish project goals\. Working in a laboratory or facility, operates and maintains experimental equipment, performs experiments, maintains a safe environment, and makes, records, and documents observations\. Performs a wide variety of technical procedures with minimal direction\.



Primary Job Duties:



Works with customers to develop new experimental processes, novel analytical techniques, new characterization methods, and optimizes existing laboratory and facility capabilities\. Develops, builds, modifies, repairs, or maintains a wide variety of laboratory apparatus and equipment, and interfaces this equipment for data acquisition\. Develops and maintains material and process specifications to support engineering and scientific processes and works with key suppliers\. Performs data analysis and interpretation, statistical error analysis, materials characterization, and information extraction, and formally documents the results for the customer\. Performs work in a safe and compliant manner, seeks out subject matter expert advice as needed, and maintains the necessary documentation\.



Required:



+ BS, Bachelors of Technology, Associates or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics \(STEM\)\.

+ Documented past success in assignments working both independently as well as part of a team;

+ Experience working in a high\-rigor, high quality lab environment in accordance with all procedures, policies, and practices;

+ Experience evaluating, assembling, disassembling and trouble\-shooting complex measurement systems;

+ Ability to obtain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.



Desired:



+ Demonstrated capabilities of a minimum of one year of experience in an electronics laboratory

+ Strong interest in measurement standards activities including at least one year of working in a standards lab, preferably an ISO 17025 accredited lab;

+ Previous experience developing and validating calibration\-related methods, processes, technical work documents and procedures;

+ Training and/or experience in statistics, error analysis and uncertainty calculations;

+ Past experience interfacing personal computers with measurement and test equipment;

+ Past experience programming computer controlled equipment;

+ Past experience using large, integrated software applications such as Maximo;

+ Past experience and training in Lean Six Sigma and/or ISO 9001 methodologies;

+ Past experience working in positions with a heavy emphasis on attention to detail and maintaining a safe and orderly lab environment;

+ Demonstrated good teamwork and communication skills to facilitate collaboration with department engineers, other technologists, and customers;

+ Experience developing and documenting effective processes and procedures;

+ Experience working safely in a laboratory environment around mitigated hazards while following all applicable ES&H protocols;

+ Demonstrated computer skills commensurate with the duties listed above, including MS\-Excel and MS\-Word;

Engineering Services includes the machine shop, inspection, TAG and Environmental Testing, and the Electronic Prototype Lab\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
