Electromagnetic Radiation Testing Technologist (Experienced)

We are seeking an Electromechanical Technologist with laboratory electrical and RF measurement experience to support Sandia Stockpile Systems Electromagnetic testing evaluation\. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate that has demonstrated experience in quality assurance compliance associated with the generation of the above stated electrical metrology\.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

+ Data acquisition from electromagnetic pulse and continuous wave illumination of electrical systems components being tested at simulator cells/facilities

+ Operating high voltage generators for use in the generation of electromagnetic field non\-ionizing radiation guided wave simulators, and electrical waveform recording instrumentation such as digital oscilloscopes, network analyzers and other common electrical meters

+ Ensuring data generated from testing is compliant with quality assurance requirements

+ Developing and implementing Engineered Safety, Work Planning and Controls, and complying with ES&H requirements, planning and coordinating daily pre\-and post\-test activities such as setting up, monitoring, and adjusting equipment and diagnostics

+ Performing critical lifts with bridge cranes and forklifts, confined space entries, and general laboratory and machine shop activities

+ Interfacing with customers includes aiding in the design, fabrication of test hardware, and/or acquiring custom test and measurement setups, and arranging for external services such as NEC equipment compliance

+ Performing all tasks in compliance with safety regulations, which include: high voltage safety, fall prevention, forklift and bridge crane operations, performing work on ladders, and confined space entries


+ Associate Degree in Engineering Technology or a closely related field, plus 5 years experience

+ Experience with voltage generators, electrical and radio frequency measurement instrumentation, mechanical and/or electrical assembly, electrical sensor operational characterization

+ Experience with machine shop and/or portable power tool equipment

+ Current, ACTIVE DoE Q Clearance


+ Experience with electrical initiators

+ Experience in use of EM/RF Guided Wave test\-cells/simulation\-facilities

+ Experience in troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing power, current, or voltage generators,

+ Experience in developing and implementing Engineered Safety, Work Planning and Controls, and complying with ES&H requirements\.

+ Good verbal and written communication skills

+ Experience with MATLAB and/or Pspice

+ Waveform Data Acquisition and Analysis Experience

Department Description:

The Electromagnetic \(EM\) Systems Engineering and Qualification Department \(1354\) provides analysis, experiments and design guidance to support the development of well\-shielded advanced electronics systems for survivability purposes in conjunction with a variety of electrical test laboratories\. This includes direct injection of electrical insults into test assets and use of large environmental test facilities to simulate fast\-pulse, microwave, lightning, electrostatic discharge and broadband continuous\-wave \(CW\) environments\. We support the qualification of complex electrical systems in normal, abnormal and elements of severe electromagnetic \(EM\) environments\. Laboratory facilities include humidity\-temperature control and combined electrical with elevated temperature testing within enclosed EM shielded rooms\. Full system qualification testing includes use of Sandia's Mode\-Stirred Chambers, 4\-meter height GTEM cell, a transportable \(variable size \- up to 7\.2 meters in height\) fast\-pulse simulator used for combined environments testing, the Sandia Lightning Simulator for direct\-strike and nearby lightning environments, and a severe amplitude EM fast\-pulse simulator\. Department 1354 works closely with Dept\. 1352 \(EM Theory\), Dept\. 1353 \(Electrical Sciences and Experiments\), and Group 1340 \(Radiation Effects Sciences & Applications\)\. Our customers base includes various organizations across Sandia as well as Strategic Partnering Programs with external government agencies and industry\. Current programs include: Mil\-Std 461, HERO, and electrostatic discharge testing \(ESD\) testing; enhanced survivability of systems life extension programs, various delivery system\-legacy payload pairs addressing EM survivability, and severe environments effects/survivability/restoration to/of civil and government agency electrical distribution and communications infrastructure\.
