Electrical Design Engineer Description at United Technologies Corporation

Electrical Design Engineer

Business Unit UTC Aerospace Systems Job ID 49595BR Date posted 05/24/2017 City Windsor Locks State Connecticut Country United States
UTC Aerospace Systems (UTAS) is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products. ISR & Space Systems is a business unit within UTAS and our products reside in deep space, low earth orbit, undersea and on the ground. We are also a major supplier to international space programs. The ISR & Space Systems business has contributed to significant advances in ground, air, space and imaging technology for over 85 years. Within ISR & Space Systems we design and manufacture Environmental Control and Life Support Systems on the International Space Station, including the space suit, and undersea in submarines.

Electrical Design Engineering designs electronics required to drive electromechanical components to life support systems for Navy and Space applications that are primarily process controllers that are either processor and/or FPGA based controls. These electrical products are typically controllers driving rotating machinery (pumps/fans/actuators) and have built in sensor/data acquisition systems with serial interface controls. They are designed for long life, high reliability and operate in severe space radiation environments and high vibratory and shock load environments. Some of these products include: process controllers, sensor signal conditioning, DC/DC Converters, FPGA based digital controllers, brushless DC motor controllers, actuator control/drives, hardware based closed loop system process control, and more.

The responsibility and duties of the Electrical Design Engineer include:
  • The candidate should possess a diverse set of skills that includes the development of electrical system architecture, trade studies, requirements derivation, requirements allocation and analysis to support the allocations to electrical products designed both in-house as well as analysis for allocations to supplier items. Those supplier items can be, but not limited to: actuators, fans pumps, sensors, brushless DC motors, heaters and stepper motors.
  • The candidate must have mixed signal Analog/Digital board design capability.
  • Experience in selection and integration of COTS equipment into our product along with custom design is required.
  • Experience with power electronics (100kW) including use of IGBT, SCR, Relays, Rectifiers, MOSFETs, and with AC induction motors is a plus.
  • The candidate should have a good practical understanding of EMC requirements equivalent to MIL-STD-461 and have the ability to assess project specific power quality requirements to understand and manage risks during the proposal, architecture development, design and qualification phases.
  • The candidate will be required to interface with customers during proposal, architecture development, systems requirements reviews, design reviews, test readiness reviews and technical interchange meetings. At times significant travel may be required to support both customer and supplier reviews. This requires the ability to communicate across technical and management disciplines professionally, effectively and independently through presentations, reports, and electronic media to support programs in both a customer lead role with suppliers and in a supplier role to major customers.
  • The candidate will work closely with the design and program staffs to insure requirements are understood, technical and programmatic risks are adequately managed, and proposals and budgets associated with the project are adequately funded for the defined tasks and managed for the electrical design organization.

Other experience considered and/or desired include:

  • Experience with sensitivity/worst case circuit analysis using SPICE based and/or SIMetrix circuit modeling tools
  • Knowledge of space radiation effects on designs and electronic component constraints is a plus.
  • Experience with using DOORs as a requirements development and management tool is desired
  • Experience with circuit design capture tools (Cadence preferred) is a plus
  • Understanding of serial communications topologies both hardware and protocols.
  • Hands on lab experience with electronic products and typical test equipment to support test and integration is a plus
Qualifications Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering a minimum, Masters preferred.
Education 10-25 years of relevant hands on experience.
