The Electric Power Systems Research Department has a post\-doctoral position open for a motivated researcher with an interest in power system protection and modernization of the distribution system\. We are looking for a PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field with a background in power systems, with an emphasis on distribution systems, microgrids, and power system protection\.

On any given day you may be called on to:

+ Conduct research on developing new power system protection algorithms and improved resilience for distribution systems and microgrids\. There is also a focus on renewable and distributed energy systems and their integration with electrical power systems, including microgrid power systems\.

+ Research with a focus on microgrid and distribution system protection design under high inverter\-based DER penetration using highly reconfigurable protection schemes including adaptive overcurrent and non\-overcurrent schemes and fault location schemes\. These strategies will also be investigated through hardware\-in\-the\-loop \(HIL\) testing using distributed generation hardware and controls to test electrical distribution system performance such as voltage regulation and protection schemes\.

+ Generate publications \(e\.g\. technical reports, conference publications, and journal publications\) that disseminate results for the design and analysis of new protection approaches, as well as concepts for modernizing the distribution system\. We fully expect that the successful candidate will not have the entire range of desired experience, and will help them grow and acquire new expertise while here at Sandia\.

Some travel will be required\.

Required:

+ Ph\.D\. in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline with a power systems background;

+ Strong research publication record relevant to the technical areas described above;

+ Proficient at distribution modeling and simulation in software packages such as OpenDSS, GridLAB\-D, SynerGEE, and/or CYME;

+ High proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink;

Desired:

+ Experience with power system protection design and analysis, performing short circuit studies, and protection coordination;

+ Knowledge of power system dynamics and experience with transient simulation tools \(e\.g\. PSCAD, PSLF, PowerWorld, PSSE\);

+ Optimization coursework, preferably applied to power system operation;

+ Familiarity with cyber security concepts as they apply to power systems;

+ Programming experience in one of the following: C; C\+\+; Matlab; Python;

+ Initiates innovative research in areas supporting projects;

+ Experience modelling distribution system and microgrid protection design under high inverter\-based DER penetration using dynamic inverter models and fault location algorithms;

+ Extensive modeling and simulation experience\. Experience in developing simulation algorithms and tools and conducting detailed analyses for electric power systems and microgrids;

+ Experience with hardware\-in\-the\-loop experiments and software such as Opal\-RT, in addition to hands\-on laboratory experience in a power engineering laboratory;

+ Knowledge of microgrid design, modelling, and analysis techniques;

+ Ability to work in a collaborative, team\-oriented environment;

+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills\.
