Description: Description About the Position:
We are currently looking for an innovative architecture leader who loves to undertake complex challenges, create groundbreaking ideas, and actualize the final products. As the Utility industry transforms, we need a leader who can act as a technology scout, sense out new opportunities, and help define transformational improvements to guide National Grid in the shift to a digital utility. In addition, we need this individual to be a practical architect who can set policies and standards, motivate a federated architecture team to follow and support those standards and who is willing to dive in where necessary to help implement them.

This role will report into the VP IS Strategy, Innovation and Ventures and will require frequent collaboration with National Grid Labs, Group Technology, US and UK project teams, and operational leadership. In addition, they will work hand in hand with the IS Leadership Team (ISLT, comprised of the CIO and CIO’s direct reports).
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Innovation Evaluate new technologies and provide recommendations for investment
Assess the organizational impact of new technologies
Capture and share best practices among the IT community
Create, prioritize, communicate, manage, and execute innovation roadmaps, project plans, and commitments
Design, innovate and build solutions that enable the latest technologies including IoT, artificial intelligence, machine learning, sensor data processing and voice assistants
Set an ambitious and challenging 5 year business innovation and architecture strategy and roadmap
Lead market analysis and innovation, driving the team to generate new ideas and business streams to grow the business, improve safety and ensure reliability of our services
Participate in the National Grid strategic planning processes, driving the long­ term plan to leverage emerging technologies and simplify our landscape with existing technologies

Architecture Leadership

Communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders Together with Domain Architects, craft a coherent and defensible story explaining why technology choices/approaches appear on our regulatory investment portfolio for the rate case / RIIO period Establish trusted EA team procedures and services, which include consulting on methods and tools, project delivery, standards and methods development, and governance Lead the implementation of business capability, reference, and target architectures to guide the development and implementation of technical solutions Guide the creation of, and alignment to, 3-5 year strategic technology roadmaps Together with the domain architects, layout domain specific roadmaps taking into account business specifics while leveraging the scale of National Grid to promote common solutions and minimize technology proliferation Establish architecture standards to drive simplification and commonality across the National Grid businesses while maintaining the flexibility necessary for each of the businesses Drive standards and platforms through influence. Guide domain architects and solution architects which reside in the business teams Work with and through partners. Ensure high levels of performance, excellent communication and delivery Ensure that work is always in the best interests of National Grid and our partners Mentor and coach direct and indirect teams spread across the US and UK

Qualifications

Knowledge & Experience Required: A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline Well versed with IT fundamentals including Agile, IT investment /portfolio management, Enterprise Architecture, Information Risk Management, ITIL, and Service Management Experience establishing or developing enterprise or solution architecture functions Experience working with external and/or internal stakeholders to implement large-scale solutions Presentation and communication skills with a high degree of comfort with technical and business audiences Experience working with startups, accelerators, and incubators Demonstrated ability to adapt to new technologies and learn quickly Experience working with stakeholders to identify relevant requirements and understand how those requirements fit into the broader enterprise context for the application / platform Have the ability to resolve complex challenges with limited oversight Significant experience of senior management in a global organization Bias for action, ability to drive for results and appetite for risk without day to day direction Entrepreneurial, capable of selling concepts and engaging others behind a shared vision / set of objectives Experience of empowering staff to perform at their best and to develop to meet National Grid’s long term needs Proven experience of successfully leading on the development of strategy and business plans Works well under pressure Excellent team player and that you can also work under your own steam. You’re not scared of rolling up your sleeves and doing the hard work yourself Experience working with partners and startups to drive innovation within the company Demonstrable experience of contributing to the wider corporate needs of an organization beyond the immediate job description Excellent communications, influencing and negotiations skills Track record of developing successful, long-lasting relationships across the business to drive forward change initiatives, including a demonstrated ability to engage and influence senior managers. Experience in coaching and mentoring others - demonstrate understanding and application of teaching/coaching for performance.
