Covanta, the largest Energy from Waste (EfW) power company in the U.S, is looking for a Director of Data Services to join our IT organization.  This influential senior level IT role will report to Covanta’s Chief Information Officer.  The position will have a broad set of data related responsibilities leading a team of professionals in a data shared service environment. The team will work across the enterprise supporting Covanta’s business data, analytics and reporting needs.  The Director role will define and ensure conformity to standards related to gathering, cleaning, configuring and storing data.  The role will work with cross functional team to identify new data and reporting opportunities.  In addition, the Director will set the data strategy and direction in new activities such as Merger & Acquisitions (M&A) and the selection of future technologies. As such experience in application architecture, configuration and integration standards and methodologies is a significant plus.  Ultimately this position is responsible for delivering a robust, scalable, reusable, high quality data and analysis in coordination with the delivery of a robust, high performance, high-quality application.


  • Leads the Data Services team in support of all data management and analytic activities.
  • Leads database administrators on the physical construction of databases for projects and maintenance activities.
  • Assures compliance to enterprise data design and maintenance standards/policies.
  • Collaborate with the organization for compliance to strategic enterprise direction
  • Lead and/or coordinate data related development of all enterprise systems. (Internet of Things, Big Data initiatives, etc.)
  • Develops, maintains, and approves data models for applications.
  • Provides technical and data leadership to the application development group, IT, and the enterprise including being conversant with and cognizant of the future direction of systems, how that direction will impact the enterprise, and how future and current systems data/information can be exploited for the benefit of the enterprise
  • Works closely with the organization to coordinate current and future data/information plans and activities including coordination and technical assistance to facilitate specific development projects that involve the computing environment, the coordination of software upgrades and the installation of new products.
  • Recognizes and identifies potential areas where existing data/information policies and procedures require change, or where new ones need to be developed, especially regarding future business expansion.
  • Consults with the business to determine logical data design for new business solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership to IT and the enterprise, especially on issues relating to future Information Technology modernization and/or expansion and Data Architecture directions and transitions.

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree preferably in computer science with 7 plus years of related work experience in data design and management
  • Exposure to application/system data structures/models
  • Knowledge of relational database technology, transaction processing and data warehouse design as well as advanced modeling and design tools
  • Self-motivated with an ability to communicate ideas in both technical and business language
  • Strong communication skills and acumen with a demonstrated ability to effectively:
    • Express complex technical concepts effectively in both verbal, written and presentation.
    • Work well with people from many different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience.
    • Elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources through relationships and political sensitivity
  • Strong organizational skills and acumen with demonstrated ability to effectively
    • Prioritize, manage and execute tasks in a changing environment
    • Coordinate tasks and responsibilities with appropriate personnel
