We are seeking a highly motivated data center operations lead to join the Computing Infrastructure Solutions department as a Computing Infrastructure Engineer\. The department oversees the operations of the CA data center: a 24/7, 10,000 square foot mission\-critical facility that provides compute, connectivity and storage to Sandia\.

Sandia is currently underway on a transformational data center modernization initiative\. The selected candidate will have significant opportunity to shape data center operations for years to come\. This includes participating in upcoming construction design reviews for a new facility and establishing oversight of operational procedures\.

The data center operations lead is responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of physical infrastructure such as electrical and mechanical systems, as well as telecommunications, environmental monitoring systems and overall efficiency of the data center\. The successful candidate will be accountable for operational excellence in both safety and security\.

The selected candidate can expect to perform a wide\-range of activities:

+ Inspect, maintain, and configure electrical distribution systems such as power distribution units and electrical cabling systems

+ Establish appropriate work planning controls and procedures

+ Monitor and maintain building management systems and data center infrastructure management \(DCIM\) tools to track energy efficiency and ensure visibility to the underlying physical infrastructure

+ Provide oversight and escort of contractors and facilities technicians performing work inside the data center facility

+ Drive best practices through crisp processes and clear documentation

+ Develop and track key performance indicators to measure efficiency and operational excellence

+ Lead customer installation and move activities such as equipment mounting, cabinet buildouts, rack layouts, hot/cold aisle configuration, etc\.

+ Oversee telecommunication cabling and wire management, including terminations and cable routing through application of appropriate standards

+ Be accountable for achieving excellence in the safety and security posture of the facility

+ Read and understand blue\-prints and schematic drawings to ascertain as\-built conditions

+ Conduct frequent inspections inside the data center to assess the working order of the systems and maintain overall tidiness of the facility


+ B\.S\. in computer science, engineering, information systems, or relevant STEM discipline plus five or more years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

+ Five or more years of experience in a data center operations environment


+ Mission critical facilities experience \(i\.e\. data center, hospital, power plant, etc\.\)

+ Comfortable taking a leadership role in overseeing data center operations and holding others accountable

+ Ability to communicate intelligently and effectively with contractors who perform maintenance or upgrades to data center systems

+ Comfortable learning quickly and working within a dynamic environment

+ Previous experience in telecommunications and/or relevant credentials from BICSI

+ Substantial knowledge and previous experience with the electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS, transfer switches, power distribution, air handlers, fire suppression, chilled water, etc\.

+ Willingness to be on\-call and respond to both planned and unplanned events

+ Excellent organizational skills with the ability to maintain all facility related documentation

+ Knowledge and experience with the Nlyte DCIM software application, including deploying DCIM in greenfield installations

+ Active DOE Q clearance

Provides enterprise level computing capabilities for Sandia/California, including platform and storage services\. Group develops and deploys virtual and cloud computing technologies to continually improve the agility, quality, and very nature of services for an increasingly mobile and collaborative workforce\. Group also supports disaster recovery infrastructure for Sandia/California\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications\. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance, which requires U\.S\. citizenship\.
