The Verification, Validation, Uncertainty Quantification and Credibility Processes Department is filling an R&D Computer Science role in support of Computational Simulation Engineering for research, development and application of verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification processes and algorithms to challenging computational simulation studies in support of core Sandia mission areas\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Perform credibility framework assessments, high performance computing\-based simulations and data analysis in partnership with engineering sciences staff in a wide range of discipline areas

+ Develop verification tests to assess simulation code correctness

+ Design computational simulation studies to quantify uncertainties arising from inherent variabilities and epistemic uncertainties

+ Performing and analyzing discretization studies to assess and estimate numerical bias errors in model solutions

+ Perform validation studies by analyzing and comparing simulation and experimental data to compute validation metrics and assess simulation model accuracy

+ Assessing simulation code and modeling predictive characteristics

+ Enabling and performing "quantification of margins and uncertainties" \(QMU\) studies for risk\-informed decision making, with a credible and quantified predictive basis

+ Support other areas of interest, including:

- Big data

- Data assimilation

- Decision support

- Design of experiments

- Model bias and calibration

- Optimization and control under uncertainty

- Random variables/fields

- Rare events

- Risk assessment

- Sampling methods

- Sensitivity analysis

- Imprecise Probability Theory


+ Bachelors AND Masters degree in a relevant STEM discipline

+ Two years related experience

+ Experience with computational modeling and simulation, including mathematical modeling and solution of coupled systems of partial differential equations \(PDEs\), as well as code and solution verification for systems of partial differential equations

+ Experience with advanced codes for simulation running on massively parallel computing clusters

+ Experience with verification/validation and/or uncertainty quantification

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance


+ PhD in a relevant STEM discipline

+ Experience with reliability methods \(FORM, SORM\), sensitivity methods, optimization, and/or stochastic expansion methocs

+ Strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to interact well with fellow technical workers of diverse technical backgrounds

+ History of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences

+ Software development experience, including working with development teams using object\-oriented frameworks

Department Description:

The mission of the Verification & Validation, Uncertainty Quantification, and Credibility Processes \(1544\) is to provide research, development, and application of mathematical and experimental techniques to assess the credibility of physics\-based computational simulations\. The multi\-disciplinary team, experienced in simulation and experimentation, draws from a wide range of disciplines, including fluid dynamics, electromagnetics, radiation effects, solid and structural mechanics, heat transfer, numerical methods, optimization, statistics, decision making and quantification of margins and uncertainties \(QMU\), to support the laboratorys mission\.

The V&V/UQ analysis support and tools developed in 1544 can be used to \(1\) help assess computational credibility for the intended use of a model, \(2\) verify correctness of simulation software, \(3\) characterize and evaluate the uncertainties of a prediction, \(4\) optimally design experiments to validate simulation models, \(5\) focus and prioritize research and development expenditures, \(6\) mitigate risk through exploration of system design alternatives, \(7\) optimize products and process in the presence of both uncertain and variable parameters, and \(8\) support risk\-informed decision making based on statistically\-quantified data\.
