Description: Description About the Position: This position is responsible for Transmission and Distribution Substation project commissioning.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Assist in the scoping for transmission and distribution substation projects including development of the scope, design criteria, construction review, data integration of deliverables (drawings, test data, etc.) Responsible for all Substation start-ups in a safe manner without impact to customers and the operating system. The primary interface with Customer Operations, Engineering, Project Management, Dispatch , etc for transmission and distribution substation project commissioning. Coordinate energization work sequences, schedules, outage scheduling, job walkthroughs and punch list preparation/completion as required. Assure substation equipment is installed and tested in accordance with National Grid "Testing and Commissioning Standards". Conduct site inspections to ensure adherence to engineering standards and specifications. Request and approve start-up procedures, dispatch display and database builds associated with transmission and distribution substation projects. Review all testing results and distribute to Substation Engineering. Develop contingency plans for all Construction Services projects required to support customer loads during construction or in the event construction is delayed. Participate in project design reviews. Ensure data from substation projects is integrated back into National Grid systems. This includes drawings, test reports, AIMMS equipment forms, vendor drawings, work order summary forms, and any other information required to support this project. Design, develop, modify, and evaluate systems, process, or facilities to support Company objectives, utilizing engineering methods. Develop highly complex engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design documents, and performance assessments. Determine methods and techniques for obtaining results. Act as a lead expert in the work group; train and mentor associate and career level engineers, technicians and drafters. Recommend alternative engineering solutions to management to meet business needs. Deliver on commitments and manage outside engineering services to accomplish the assigned work. Maintain project timeliness and budgets. Analyze and design engineering methods. Design, develop, modify, and evaluate systems, processes, or facilities to support company objectives. Provide technical support to internal and external departments for the application, operation, and maintenance of apparatus. Includes testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting. Specify, evaluate, and select apparatus for stations. Resolve technical issues. Assist in developing long-range maintenance philosophies. Review operation and maintenance practices. Assist in project estimating and economic analysis. Manage multiple projects at one time. Work in a Project Management team environment. Travel will be required
Qualifications Knowledge & Experience Required: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of five or more years of directly related experience in utility engineering and/or operations. Understanding of Company's business, and relevant policies, procedures, and practices. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations and the National Electric Codes. Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness. Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations. Proficient with the use of personal computers including automated tools. Valid driver’s license. Valid First Aid/CPR card. Ability to manage several projects at one time. Ability to work in energized stations. Travel and outside work. Ability to carry 60 pounds of equipment. Ability to produce technical reports, analyses, and documentation. Good interpersonal skills. Mobility in and around a substation Knowledge of substation construction and maintenance techniques Knowledge of NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NESC, SATM, ISO, EPA, ASTM, ASME Knowledge of maintenance philosophy Knowledge of protection operation and reliability philosophy 3-phase power system theory/operation both static and dynamic Knowledge of utility system practices Load flow theory/application Reactive compensation theory Short circuit theory/application Motor/generator theory/application Computer skills Knowledge of operation of oil and SF6 equipment Knowledge of operation of heavy equipment Knowledge of power transformers Knowledge of load tap changers Knowledge of potential and current transformer Knowledge of MV, HV, and EHV power circuit breakers Knowledge of metal clad switchgear Knowledge of circuit switchers Knowledge of disconnect and air break switches Knowledge of synchronous condensers Knowledge of series and shunt capacitors Knowledge of reactors Knowledge of AC and DC controls Knowledge of batteries Knowledge of equipment testing methods Analysis of apparatus test data Troubleshooting Knowledge of PLCs, HMI, SCADA, Metering, System Protection Knowledge of utility system practices Knowledge of hydraulic/pneumatic systems Knowledge of material science
