Description: Description About the Position: The Civil Construction Supervisor, under the general direction of the Manager will be responsible for overseeing assigned contract work and coordinating the daily activities of assigned civil or electrical contractor crews to assure high standards of safety, security, environmental compliance, and assuring uninterrupted service is delivered to customers in a timely and professional manner consistent with Company and regulatory requirements. Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to): · Providing proactive leadership and direction to the electric transmission, distribution, or substation/civil construction contractor workforce to ensure that high standards of safety, security, and environmental compliance are developed and consistently maintained; · Working closely with contracted workforce to ensure development of a complete Work Proposal, including construction work plan, detailed schedule, Safety & Health Plan, and outage plan;

· Ensuring that external resource needs are adequately identified and assigned to fully support the construction contract work plans, schedule, and budget;

· Taking a proactive role interfacing with the appropriate individuals to fully understand contract program needs and ensure that promised commitments are delivered on time and within budget;

· Participating in construction conference calls and meetings to support the requirement to provide weekly updates, crew activity and reports;

· Assuring that assigned personnel are properly directed, trained, licensed, and evaluated within Company guidelines and procedures;

· Maintaining a thorough understanding of department emergency response procedures to help arrange and provide resource support as needed; and travel within NE and NY service territories during major weather events,

· Coordinating with external resources for pre-construction meetings, as required

· Work in company derived computer systems for assignment of daily platform work, contractor proposals and estimates and initiate approvals for completed work

· Ensure high standards of safety, security and environmental compliance for all construction and maintenance activities consistent with NG Electric Operating Procedures and Project Management & Complex Construction protocols; Coach crews in National Grid work methods and work practices and continuously reinforcing safety and environmental requirements daily; · Enforce Contractor Safety Requirements, Health, Safety & Environmental Plans, Safety Initiatives and SHE Communications to ensure these documents are reviewed, shared and understood by the contractor’s workforce. Participate in contractor safety stand downs, project meetings, apprentice safety training programs with the contractors and the local contracted union work force to ensure that information is shared in a timely manner, to keep safety at the forefront and to help support an open working alliance team approach.
Qualifications Knowledge & Experience Required:
Associated degree in Construction related fields and/or ten years of experience in civil construction activities that include: substation structural foundations, soils and compaction principals, trenching and shoring to support manhole and duct bank installations working in and around, energized vaults and manholes and new and existing URD UCD type construction. Familiar with the operation and maintenance of electric transmission, substation and distribution facilities with a strong understanding of the applicable construction standards, operating procedures and work methods associated with the civil portions of the electrical system. Knowledge of Federal, State, local and company safety and environmental rules and regulations. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with self-direction and high motivation; The ability to understand construction field issues, prints specification sheets, schematics, one line diagrams, and instructional information to provide guidance for the construction, maintenance, and repair of the civil infrastructure that supports the underground electric distribution lines, and substation equipment; A thorough understanding of electrical principles and the hazards associated with underground buried URD/ UCD facilities; A good mechanical aptitude; Knowledge of applicable maintenance practices, safety requirements, and labor and commercial contracts; The ability to travel throughout the service territory and work extended hours and weekends as required on construction projects as well as in emergency situations, as needed; Strong communications skills (both verbal and written); Ability to advance on National Grid’s Clearance and Control list. Valid Drivers license, Construction Supervisors license preferred
