We are seeking a R& D Laboratory Support Technologist for the Analytical Technologies (AT) Department. AT is responsible for performing chemical and physical testing of materials and components for the neutron generator programs within the Weapons Product Support Center. The Department consists of laboratories specializing in defect/failure analysis, surface chemistry, radiochemistry, metallurgy and Ceramics, wet-chemistry and instrumental analysis, gas dynamics and mass spectrometry and particulate contamination control. This position is an opportunity to be a critical member of a team helping solve problems for a national security critical component supporting production and design.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work in various chemical and materials characterization labs within the department
+ Support work related to wet chemistry and instrumental analysis, materials and samples preparation and characterization, radio-chemistry, and surface science
+ Utilize and be responsible to provide customers results on instruments such as FT-IR, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, scintillation counters, DMA, TGA, TMA, SEM, XPS, and Auger tools
+ Be adaptable to support the department's varied and evolving research activities including help build new setups for study phenomena of interest, taking ownership of current equipment and results, and teaming with SME?s in within and outside the center if required.

Required:



+ Bachelor?s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science or Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science or Engineering or related field
+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and a Radiation Worker II certification.

Desired:

+ Experience with or demonstrated aptitude for use of analysis tools such as (but not limited to) ICP-OES, ICP-MS, FTIR, TGA, scintillation detectors, SEM, TEM, and surface analysis tools.
+ Curiosity and willingness to learn.
+ Willingness to work with tritium-bearing materials.
+ Willingness to obtain Green Belt Certification/Lean Six Sigma training.
+ Willingness to work independently with minimal supervision, and take ownership of projects and processes.
+ Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects.
+ Willingness to work safely and securely according to SNL ES&H and Security
+ Active DOE security clearance.



The neutron generator enterprise utilizes ceramics, metals, polymers and thin films to make devices that operate at the limits of materials performance. Materials related issues can limit the performance of existing devices, and must be fully understood before implementing new designs. The primary mission of the department is to provide materials characterization capabilities for the Neutron Generator Enterprise. The research environment is dynamic with projects spanning processing, joining, mechanical, chemical and electrical testing of materials, and multi-material systems. The AT team provides technical expertise, consultation and analysis capabilities required to support the Centers mission of providing a reliable product to the nations stockpile. The AT team is a mix of staff with advanced degrees in Materials, Chemistry and Surface Science, and several technologists with similar technical backgrounds. The work of the department is mix of problem solving activities, advanced characterization of new and legacy materials, and forward looking research. The department has several collaborative projects with staff within Sandia and other national labs. The selected candidate will have an opportunity to be involved in this mix of activities depending on aptitude, background, and customer needs

Security Clearance:


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications.
