TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION in Mechanical Engineering at Binghamton University (SUNY)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the State University of New York at Binghamton invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in solid mechanics and design at the assistant professor level beginning Spring 2018 or Fall 2018.  Candidates must have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.

Candidates must have a demonstrated track record in the broad area of design or solid mechanics and will be expected to develop a research program capable of securing competitive external research funding. Candidates must also have a potential for quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in mechanical engineering and will be expected to address teaching needs in the areas of mechanical engineering design, design optimization and mechanics.

The department is interested in a candidate who can conduct research in one or more of the following mechanics-based design areas: optimal design, robust design, design for manufacturing and reliability, life-cycle design, bio-inspired design, or related areas that have strong computational and/or experimental solid mechanics components. Mechanics/Design research with applications in additive manufacturing, renewable energy, medical devices, aerospace, automotive, or other transportation systems is of particular interest. The candidate’s research should complement existing department research areas, which include sensors, acoustics and vibrations, MEMS, mechatronics, energy control systems, electronic packaging, computational fluid mechanics, microfluidics, nanomaterials, and nanotechnology. Candidates are also encouraged to familiarize themselves with University-wide smart-energy and biomedical research thrusts (http://www.binghamton.edu/tae/).

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has 21 faculty members, with undergraduate and graduate enrollments of approximately 400 and 110 students, respectively. The Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Watson School are dedicated to the goal of building a diverse and inclusive teaching, research, and working environment. Potential applicants who share this goal, especially underrepresented minorities, women and persons with disabilities, are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional information about the Mechanical Engineering Department at Binghamton University can be found online at http://www.binghamton.edu/me/

Applicants must provide a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, a statement of research plans, a statement of teaching interests, and a list of at least three professional references, including addresses, e-mail and telephone numbers.  Applications received by October 16, 2017, will receive full consideration. Early applications are strongly encouraged and may be considered for a start date of January 2018. The search will remain open until an appointment has been made.  Binghamton University is an Equal Opportunity/ Affirmative Action Employer.
